Short answer: yes, most people can take magnesium and iron on the same day without any real issue. What actually matters is timing, not whether the two are compatible. Taken in a large enough dose at the same time, magnesium and iron compete for the same absorption pathway in your gut, and that competition is what shows up in the research.
Why they compete
Iron and magnesium are both handled by the same doorway into your bloodstream. The small intestine uses a transport protein called DMT1 (divalent metal transporter 1) to move divalent cations, ions with a 2+ charge, across the gut wall. Iron uses it. So do zinc and manganese. Magnesium, to a lesser degree, does too.
When a lot of magnesium and a lot of iron show up in the gut at the same time, they’re both trying to get through the same door. Some of the iron loses out.
This is the same basic mechanism behind the much better-known calcium-iron interaction, just weaker. Calcium is a stronger competitor at the DMT1 transporter than magnesium is, which is part of why the calcium-iron interaction gets more attention and the magnesium-iron one flies under the radar.
How much does it actually reduce absorption?
Less is known here than for calcium and iron, partly because fewer people take magnesium at doses high enough to trigger a noticeable effect, and partly because the effect itself is smaller to begin with.
For reference, 600mg of calcium taken with iron can cut iron absorption by 40 to 60 percent. Magnesium at a comparable dose produces a smaller reduction, but it’s a real, measurable effect, and it lines up with what you’d expect given the shared transport pathway.
Does this apply to you?
For most people taking a normal magnesium supplement (200 to 400mg) alongside a normal iron supplement (18 to 30mg), the overlap isn’t going to be something you notice. It becomes worth paying attention to if you’re taking magnesium at 400 to 500mg in a single dose while also taking iron for diagnosed iron deficiency, not just general maintenance.
It also matters more if your iron absorption is already compromised for another reason: you’re vegetarian or vegan, you have celiac disease, or you have an inflammatory bowel condition. Small reductions count for more when you don’t have much margin to begin with. The same goes if you’re taking a form of magnesium, like glycinate or oxide, at the higher end of what’s typically sold over the counter.
The fix
Take them at different times. Magnesium in the morning, iron at night, or whatever split fits your schedule, as long as there’s a meal or a few hours between them. This clears up the competition without requiring you to change dose or switch forms; just add a gap in timing.
Bottom line
Magnesium and iron can be taken together. If you’re on a standard dose of each, don’t worry about it. If you’re taking a high dose of magnesium for a specific reason and you also depend on your iron supplement to correct a deficiency, split them up during the day. It’s a small adjustment, and it removes the only real downside.
